Tonasket lies in the north-central part of Washington, in Okanogan County, about 20 miles from the Canadian border and four hours from Seattle. It is a town of just over a thousand people, covering less than a square mile, and its economy rests on fruit storage and processing and on forestry. It was platted in 1910, incorporated in 1927 and named after Chief Tonasket of the Okanogan people. At the time of the story its population was 1,016, little changed from the 957 recorded in 1950, and it was older, poorer and more female than the American average.
In late 2008 the marriage was failing. Danny began an affair with Michelle Lee Kitterman, a 25-year-old bartender and waitress with a young son named Nathan, and Michelle was 11 weeks pregnant with Danny's child. She wanted Danny to make Michelle have an abortion, and when that did not happen she began telling friends and Danny that she wanted Michelle and the baby dead.
Michelle had troubles of her own. She had been using methamphetamine since about 2006 or 2007, and in a small town that meant she knew the local dealers. They met four times, in Spokane at a diner, in Tonasket and somewhere in between, and haggled over the price.
In February 2009 the group began to plan. An attempt to get a gun fell through, and at first the plan was to beat Michelle until she lost the baby. She also rented a 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer from her own workplace, filling in the paperwork properly, as the vehicle for the killing.
They drove her to a casino and then, on the way back, stopped on Stalder Road near Republic. They left her dying beside the road and drove away. Her body was found the next morning, 1 March 2009, in a driveway in the Pine Creek area just south of Tonasket.
The investigation moved quickly.
