The story

Iowa, Louisiana, is a town of about 3,200 people in Calcasieu Parish, in the south-west of the state, outside Lake Charles and almost at the Gulf of Mexico. Midwesterners from Kansas, Illinois and Iowa settled it in the mid-nineteenth century, and the North American Land and Timber Company developed much of the land, bringing in Seamon A. Knapp, president of the Iowa State College of Agriculture, to demonstrate rice growing. The railroad, rice and cattle sustained the town, and oil was struck in 1930. At the time of the episode it was about 66 per cent white and 31 per cent black, with a median household income of $42,328, a median home value of $176,400 and violent crime more than three times the national average.

In 1984, at 17, he raped his 14-year-old sister at knifepoint while their mother was in hospital.

Roland introduced him to Christina Burgeon, a 19-year-old McNeese State University student who worked part-time at a pizza place. They spent the evening with her friends.

He pulled over, choked her until she passed out, and when she began breathing he strangled her with a rope. When she still did not die he put a long wooden board across her neck and jumped on it, and he cut her throat and dug out her eyes so she could not identify him.

At his aunt's house he was wearing different trousers, had no shirt or shoes and was covered in scratches and bite marks. He claimed he had fought a country boy and thrown mud with Roland. The same morning he told Hewie Rushing he thought he might have killed someone and described the killing, but Rushing did not believe him. About nine days later, after hearing a girl was missing from the lounge, Rushing and his girlfriend went to the police.

Police searched the sheds and found Burgeon's body with a rope around her neck and a bloodstained wooden board nearby.

The defence argued that at most the sex was forcible but not aggravated rape.

In November 1999 he and three other condemned inmates cut through their cell doors with smuggled hacksaw blades and escaped. They got two miles before bloodhounds tracked them down in a swampy area. Warden Kane blamed a guard who took a bribe to bring in the blades and officers who failed to notice the cutting over three weeks. Nobody was prosecuted.

He was due to die on February 2nd, 2002. He had king crab and gumbo and said goodbye to his mother.

His last meal was boiled crawfish, crawfish stew, a garden salad with Italian dressing, oatmeal cookies and chocolate milk. He mouthed 'you're fired' at his attorney, said 'let's get it on, fuckers' and was pronounced dead. Christina Burgeon is buried at Prene Memorial Park cemetery in Lake Charles, and her father said his smile said it all.
