The story

Warrenton, Virginia sits in Fauquier County about an hour from Washington, D.C., a small town of just under 10,000 people in the northern part of the state. It grew from a crossroads with a trading post called the Red Store, got its courthouse in 1790 and its name from a military academy honouring General Joseph Warren, and was incorporated in 1810. It was a rich, old-money Southern town, described in one article as one of the richest in the whole South, and it still is: the median home price is $365,000 against a national average of $185,000, and the average household income is $73,000 against $53,000.

Their father was a billionaire international arms dealer, the world's biggest small arms dealer, who ran Interarms, sold weapons to both sides of the Cuban revolution and the Central American guerrilla wars, and was widely believed to be connected to the CIA.

In 1994 she began spending time at the Great Metto Polo Club and in 1995 she joined, pledged to build a polo field on her land, and met Roberto Viegas, an Argentinian professional polo player in his mid-thirties who had come to the United States at twenty and played his way around the clubs as a hired professional. She hired him for her own team, they began dating, he moved into Ashland Farm, and friends said they planned to marry and have children. He kept working part-time in an orchard and sent money home to Argentina, and when a $400 saddle repair was beyond him she quietly arranged to pay for it as a birthday surprise.

In late August and the first week of September 1997 the couple argued about playing a fundraising polo match in Pittsburgh, which they attended on Saturday, September 6th, and where friends thought they seemed happy.

Her sister Diana, who had heard gunshots, was told not to come into the kitchen because Roberto was dead. Virginia law did not require her to retreat in her own home.

Her lawyer was Blair Howard, who had defended Lorena Bobbitt. The prosecution's evidence was that there was almost no blood on the knife, that blood spatter showed Viegas was seated at the table for all four shots, and that the holster for the murder weapon and an open box of bullets were in her bedroom. Medical experts said her cuts were superficial and self-inflicted. She testified that he had punched her in July, put a horse's leading rope around her neck in August and threatened to kill her, and that after cutting her arm he came at her so she turned and shot him four times.

In 2004 she and her sister sold Ashland Farm for $4.9 million and moved to the even larger 450 acre La Baron Farm in Virginia.
