The story

When the deputy was distracted by a disturbance in another cell, the two men walked out, took the fourth-floor courthouse elevator down and fled on foot. Sheriff Royce McMahen was alerted and roadblocks went up by about 8.20 p.m. At about 9.15 p.m. Conon Brown and his wife Lois drove up to one of the roadblocks on their way home. The sheriff himself was there, shook hands with Conon, whom he knew, and waved them through without telling them that two armed escapees were loose. The Browns had been at their camp at Lake Bistineau and left at about 11 p.m. so that Erleen could put Newt's turkey in the oven; they were home by about 11.30. Their house on Bellevue Road in Dixie Inn stood beside the family contracting business and the houses of several of their children.

They waited in the barn, watched the couple go inside, found the car locked, and then discovered a carport storeroom with a refrigerator full of beer. Their plan was to wait until the couple were asleep and then smash the patio door and rush them.

They threw a large chunk of petrified wood from the rock garden through it, knocked out the family's Dalmatian, Sissy, with a blow to the head, and ran down the hall to the bedroom. Erleen was standing and screaming; Newt was still on the bed. The men forced them face down, ransacked the house, found a shotgun and a rifle, and then .38 cartridges in a drawer. They emptied Erleen's purse, took liquor from the kitchen cabinets and put it in the couple's car, found about $1,800 in cash and took clothes.

They tied the Browns' wrists and ankles with electrical cords pulled from appliances, including a clock cord that stopped at 1.50 a.m., and gagged them with T-shirts. He knelt on the bed between the two bound victims, put the .38 against the back of Newt Brown's head and fired, then shot Erleen in the same way. Before leaving he pulled the covers up to their necks, which is how Dennis Brown found them when he arrived for Christmas dinner in the early afternoon. The raw turkey was still on top of the stove and groceries were scattered across the kitchen floor.

The Lincoln was abandoned in high water on a county road near Vivian.

On 5 January 1983 the pair were at a motel in Atlanta, Texas. They surrendered without resistance.

His fingerprints were on the steering wheel and the driver's seat, and a fibre on his clothing matched a blanket from the Browns' bed, though the defence argued it could have transferred in the car. A psychiatrist found antisocial personality disorder but no mental disease or defect.

Gwen Hill testified that she had not known of the escape or the murders until she heard a newscast in the Atlanta motel.

The families sued for $1.7 million in wrongful death. He maintained to the end that he had never entered the Browns' house, made a two-minute religious statement and gave a thumbs up as he was strapped into the chair.
