His mother died when he was six months old, and the family lived in a two-room shack with no plumbing that a welfare agency described as utter filth and poverty.
He left with a sixth-grade education, five foot five and about 220 pounds. His record began in 1967 with disorderly conduct, after he ran down a Dover street carrying a rifle, followed by grand larceny and, in 1968, burglary of a Dover home. In 1970 he married nineteen-year-old Susan Hughes and they lived in a trailer with their baby daughter Christine. His wife left in 1979 after he threatened to kill her and her parents.
On May 21st, 1979, he walked away from the Plummer Center in Wilmington at one in the afternoon and turned up at the Cokers' trailer with a bottle of vodka, saying he was not going back. He knocked her down, beat at the drawer and fired at her; the pistol clicked. He grabbed what cash was loose and left with a bottle in one hand and a .25 calibre pistol in the other.
Lambertson and his wife Clara, seventy-three, had been married fifty-six years, farmed sixty-seven acres, and were described as quiet, god-fearing people who never bothered a soul. He took the twelve-gauge shotgun Gilbert kept by the door, sat them in their chairs and shot them both with the shotgun and the pistol. Gilbert was hit in the hand, chest and cheek and then in the face at close range, which took away half his head; Clara was shot from behind in the shoulder, then the abdomen and the neck. The medical examiner said any of the wounds could have been fatal. Their daughter-in-law Marianne, picking strawberries across the street, saw a short, stocky man leave with a shotgun and went in to find them dead in the living room.
A state police helicopter was called in.
Interviewed in January 1996, he claimed he had been drinking and taking pills all day and remembered nothing, but said he felt it was his fault. On January 25th, 1996, he ate a last meal of well done steak, baked potato, buttered rolls, peas and vanilla ice cream and was walked up twenty-three steps to the gallows. He was the last man hanged in the United States.
