The story

Chadwicks is a small census-designated place in Oneida County, central New York, technically part of the town of New Hartford but with an identity of its own, a few miles from Utica. In the 1990s a former junior high school on Oneida Street, a big three-storey building put up in 1916, became the home of the Word of Life Christian Church. He had arrived after a tangled early life: at sixteen he smashed the windows of a man he wrongly believed was a police informant, hitchhiked to Ohio and then Florida, worked as a deckhand on a scallop boat, married a woman he met at the Pillow Talk Lounge in Cocoa Beach two weeks later, and in May 1979, at the end of his rope, had a vision of a rose-coloured sky with God on his throne and Jesus at his side. His first wife left him, took their children to Colorado and eventually ran off with another man, leaving the children behind.

She married young, had children, lost a third to sudden infant death syndrome, left her husband and moved back near her parents in Clayville, where her brother Rick Wright, already a member, urged her to try the church. The couple bought a rundown hundred-year-old house for $28,000 in 1993 and went on to have Lucas on 8 November 1995, Christopher in 1998 and another son in 2000.

The church started its own kindergarten-to-twelfth-grade school with volunteer teachers and no qualifications, then bought the building with $175,000 raised from the congregation. A constitution gave the pastor authority over every part of members' lives; members had to attend twice a week, tithe and submit to church discipline. He installed gates, cameras, a fence and fifteen-foot hedges, required members to ask permission before speaking to relatives outside the church, and set the men to work stripping asbestos and building him an apartment with a spa bath and an indoor basketball court. She became assistant pastor in 2009, doubled the length of services to four hours, and in the spring of 2012 began to fixate on Lucas Leonard, then sixteen, as a demon-possessed boy who was invading her dreams.

On 11 October 2015 the Leonards drove to church in two cars. Luke and Chris were questioned about witchcraft, pornography and molesting children, and then beaten. By eight Luke had slid off his chair and was lying in a trail of blood. He had bled to death from a wound to his penis; the hospital first thought he had been shot.

A full investigation found no indication of any sexual abuse of any child. Chris, hospitalised in a serious condition for weeks, testified in detail about what was done to him.

The book on the case is Without a Prayer: The Death of Lucas Leonard and How One Church Became a Cult by Susan Ashline.
