She found an advertisement in Soldier of Fortune magazine placed by a man calling himself a weapon specialist, jungle warfare pilot and professional for hire. She rang the number and arranged to meet him at a Shoney's halfway between them. He had placed the advertisement hoping to assemble a team of mercenaries for clandestine work abroad, but most of the calls he received were from people wanting a spouse watched or a rival hurt. Over the following weeks the request changed from frightening Cecil to killing him. Neither sister had $10,000. Their solution was to burn down their grandmother's house and collect the insurance. Batie died at the scene. No physical evidence tied anyone to the killing, and everyone questioned denied knowing anything. The case went cold. Her husband, Joe Bannister, forty-two, a quiet, hard-working former airman who worked for the electric company, stood between her and the life she wanted. Shortly after midnight on 2 February 1985 a caller reported a car in a drainage ditch on a remote Bradford County road. Joe Bannister was dead behind the wheel. The car had barely any damage, but the autopsy found two gunshot wounds, one a graze to the back of the head and the second through the brain. His mother, Mary Watson, backed the story. On 5 February the Bradford County authorities learned of Cecil Batie's killing and began treating the two deaths as the work of one conspiracy. The trail also led to Texas. He flew more than a hundred combat missions in Vietnam and was decorated, but after his discharge he struggled. He was admitted to a veterans hospital in Houston in April 1976 suffering from what was then called explosive behaviour disorder, and again in June 1983, when he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. He drank heavily, could not hold a job and was violent towards his wife Sandra and their son Gary. He was also obsessed with his first cousin, Theresa Heatherington, with whom he had a long affair. Bob had been trying to have Sandra killed for years. In 1982 he gave Mark Huber $500 as a down payment. He asked Mark and David Huber and Gordon Matheson to choke her, run her over with a truck, burn her, hit her with a baseball bat or stage a rape and robbery. None would do it. Eight days before the killing Bob took out a $100,000 insurance policy on his wife. He and Bob ransacked the house to make it look like a burglary. Bob made sure that his fifteen-year-old son Gary was the one who found her body in the kitchen. By then the Florida investigation was closing in. The judge gave her seventeen years, the maximum. No record of his last meal could be found.
