Springfield, Tennessee, lies about thirty-five minutes outside Nashville and had a population of 18,561 at the time of the story. Samantha K. Klaus, known as Sam, was born on 16 August 1970 in Galion, Ohio, one of four children, and attended Greenbrier High School. A mutual friend set the pair up on a blind date, and they married in 2002. Sam was the outgoing one, a greeter at Baker's Market for several years who never met a stranger and followed Alabama college football and the Tennessee Titans. They bought a three-bedroom, two-bath house at Clydesdale Lane in 2006 for $139,000 and raised Sam's daughter McKenzie, born in 1991, there. Neighbours remembered the couple as quiet and reclusive but friendly enough to wave.
By 2014 he had been laid off from the Toyota dealership, the bills were piling up and the house was sliding into foreclosure. Sam had stopped working. Their twelfth wedding anniversary fell on 4 November 2014.
He put her body in an upright freezer in the garage, partially dismembered her, and spent the next two days cleaning the house until it was, as the first officers described it, immaculate. Then, at 2.45 a.m. on 7 November, he telephoned 911 and, in a calm, polite voice, said he had shot his wife two nights earlier, put her in the freezer, and had just checked on her to find she was not dead. He said she had a large hole in her temple, that he thought he had broken her wrist moving her frozen body, and that he had got her to blink once for yes and twice for no. He gave the address and directions, said the front door was open and the lights were on, asked for paramedics and said he still loved her.
Officers found the front door open and the lights on. In the garage freezer lay Samantha, frozen solid, partially dismembered and long dead. The Robertson County Emergency Medical Services assistant director, Russell Gupton, said there was no possibility she had been alive. Police set up a command centre at Rivergate Toyota and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation put him on its ten most wanted list, with a $1,000 reward.
He was driving a white 2007 Toyota Camry with Tennessee plate 682 NHF. The next day at 3.45 p.m., about twelve hours after Samantha was found, police stopped the car on Interstate 65 near mile marker 12 in Kentucky. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Nothing is known about where he had been or why.
A month later McKenzie attended the annual Wings of Love ceremony in Robertson County, which honoured 25 homicide victims that year, and said she would never have closure or answers. A year after the killings she held a memorial and spoke of both parents with love, saying her father had simply snapped under the loss of his job and the foreclosure. The house was sold twice in 2016, first for $138,000 and two months later for $170,000. Under a local news article about the case, commenters spent the day arguing about whether the house was in Oakland Farms or Saddlebrook subdivision.
