Jason Schaefer was born in 1988 and worked as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service out of the Longmont, Colorado, post office. The relationship ended about six months after the boy was born, when Jason moved out, and the two argued over custody for years; at different times each sought a restraining order against the other.
They had met when she was thirteen and he was twenty.
On 13 October 2021, at about 12.32 p.m., a woman at Sicily Circle in Longmont called 911 to say that a postal worker had been shot at the end of her driveway and that a man in a hoodie and a blue mask had run away. Jason Schaefer had been shot four times beside a cluster of mailboxes on Heather Hill Street just west of Renaissance Drive: three wounds to the body and one to the face. Neighbours gathered, and the postmaster who came to the scene looked down at the body and asked whether the baby mama had done it.
A camera had caught a black Nissan SUV with the right front passenger hubcap missing at 12.06 p.m., and another resident saw a black SUV backed into an access road to a field at the end of Renaissance and Summerland Drive.
Police collected the boy from Gateway Montessori School and asked Rosa to wait with him at the station. In interview she said she had been at AJ's house eating pizza rolls with him, though surveillance showed AJ at Hooters with friends at the time. She denied saying that AJ would shoot Jason, asked for a lawyer, and a postal inspector carried on questioning her about work.
After the murder forty-seven postal trucks drove Jason's route in a memorial procession. His mother said at the memorial that he had been like a hummingbird or a butterfly who brought joy and whimsy, and that she used to listen for the sound of his old mail car.
