Kirkland, Washington, is a suburb on the east side of Lake Washington, in King County, about twenty minutes from Seattle. Shortly after five in the morning on 23 June 1990 a McDonald's employee taking rubbish out to the dumpsters shared with the Black Angus restaurant found the naked body of a young woman in the parking lot. She was Mary Ann Polrike, twenty-seven, who worked at a medical device manufacturing company. She had no gunshot or stab wounds. Her body had been posed: she lay on her back with her left foot crossed over her right ankle, her head turned to the left, her arms folded over her stomach, a dip container resting over her right eye and a Douglas fir pine cone in her hand. The post-mortem found that she had been manually strangled, that her skull was fractured and her face badly beaten, that her liver had been split by kicks, and that a non-human object had caused an anal tear. Her blood alcohol was 0.14.
Polrike had gone to Papagayo's, a singles bar in Bellevue, on the evening of 22 June with two friends. They left at about 9.30 pm; she stayed. McLean waited at the Overlake Denny's until about 5.30 am and then found a ride home. He later told McLean that he had been the one who was sick, and that he had driven a woman home. Polrike's Camaro, purse and sweater were still at the bar.
His parents separated when he was about six months old; his mother, Joyce, left him with her own mother and went to college. The family was the only black family in their neighbourhood. In his early teens he was a burglar and a car thief, and he spent hours at the Mercer Island police station, where officers gave him chores and let him hang around. In 1987 he was diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder. In 1988 he skimmed $23,000 from the Nintendo Arcade in eight months.
On 8 August 1990 Carol Marie Beath, thirty-five, a bartender at Cucina Cucina in Bellevue and the mother of two daughters, aged nine and thirteen, spent the evening out. She spoke to her ex-husband Paul at 9.30 pm and her boyfriend Mike Sewell at 10.30, then met friends at the Keg, where John Comfort was tending bar. She left a little after two in the morning, drove home, and was seen by a neighbour unlocking her front door at about 2.30, alone and a little tipsy. She showered and lay down at about three. At 4.30 her thirteen-year-old daughter Kelly heard someone in the hall and saw a torch beam move from the bathroom into her sister's room and then her own; she assumed it was her mother's boyfriend and went back to sleep. At 8.30 she found her mother's bedroom door locked, went round to the sliding glass door and saw the body. Her father came and entered through that door. Carol was on her back on the bed, the bedspread pulled to the foot, naked except for red high-heeled shoes. Her legs were apart and bent, blood had been smeared on them as if finger-painted, and her own .22 rifle had been placed between her legs with the barrel inserted five and a half inches into her vagina. A pillow covered her face; beneath it a dry-cleaning bag was over her head, held by a belt around her neck. She had been beaten to death with an instrument that left Y-shaped marks and crushed the left side of her skull. She had bite marks, broken ribs that penetrated the chest cavity, and a lacerated liver. Two wedding ring sets and six small Crown Royal bags containing silver dollars and tip money were missing.
On 30 August 1990 Andrea Levine, twenty-four, who went by Randy, met her boyfriend at a restaurant in Kirkland to discuss a trip to the San Juan Islands, had a drink with girlfriends at the Maple Gardens, left not long after midnight and drove home at about 1.30 am to her basement apartment in the home of Robert Hayes. At five the next morning Hayes let his dogs out, saw a dark figure about thirty feet away near Randy's basement window and chased him off. The following Monday his wife went into the apartment because Randy's cat was crying, smelled old blood and found the body. Randy had been struck repeatedly on the head with an iron bar or an aluminium bat. She had 231 small knife wounds, inflicted after death, some in patterns. She was posed on her back with a copy of The Joy of Sex under her left forearm and a plastic dildo in her mouth. Her amethyst ring and every knife in the kitchen were gone.
He denied the murders and refused to give a DNA or hair sample. He asked a roommate to bring him his copy of a crime scene search handbook.
On 11 October 1990 police stripped the interior of McLean's truck. Randy's amethyst ring was recovered from a pawn shop in Canada and identified by her sister-in-law.
Jack Olsen's 1995 book Charmer covered the case, and it has been dramatised in several television series.
