They married in 1995 after the birth of their son Jack in late 1994, and their daughter Hannah was born in 1998.
In 2000 she lost a hundred pounds, won the Ms Washington beauty pageant, moved to Las Vegas and started a limousine company.
Russell had been seeing Marge Bally, a woman about twenty years older, but in early December 2003 he ended that affair and decided to spend Christmas with his family and try to reconcile. On December 26 the couple had sex and ate breakfast with the children. At 10.45 Russell kissed everyone goodbye, said he was running errands and might go surfing, and drove off in his yellow Geo Tracker.
Between 11 and 11.30 a neighbour, Diane Bailey, saw the yellow Tracker moving slowly along Wall Road. Around 11.30 to noon Russell reached Wall Road, owned by the Black family, who were on holiday in Costa Rica. At about 4.30 two women walking to the beach saw the Tracker with its passenger door open and the interior light on, and agreed to call the police if it was still there next day.
At 4 p.m. on December 27 Joseph Dusset, walking with his children, found the vehicle and saw a figure slumped over the wheel. Russell was dead from a single gunshot wound between the eyes. The seat belt lay across him but was not buckled, the transmission was in reverse and the parking brake was on. Investigators first assumed suicide, but there was no note and no gun, and the medical examiner found the bullet had travelled front to back from less than twelve inches, an angle inconsistent with suicide. A .380 shell casing was later found wedged between the seat and the door frame.
She asked no questions about why they were there and spoke only negatively about Russell. In January 2004 she filed insurance claims for $200,000 through AIG and $300,000 to $400,000 through Farmers, hired a lawyer, refused polygraph tests and stopped talking to police.
In August investigators travelled to Florida, but hurricanes Charlie and Francis disrupted the inquiry. On August 19 Keith Ogden called to say he had the gun, which he had held since January; ballistics confirmed it was the murder weapon.
He taught and played guitar in local bands; his wife Jean visited and sent money until her telephone was tapped.
