The story

Tammy Jo Harbin was born on 7 January 1968 and grew up in Jeffersonville, Indiana, in Clark County, the daughter of Darrell and Linda. She had two living brothers, Tim and Jason, and a brother, Darren, who died young. She graduated from Jeffersonville High School in 1986 and in the 2010s worked in medical billing and coding at Zirmed, a healthcare company in Louisville. She married and divorced, keeping the surname Blanton, and in 2014, at 46, she was living in her own house on Locust Street in Jeffersonville.

He described his childhood as good or better than most. At 17 he made his girlfriend, Sabrina Elder, pregnant.

He took a .22 pistol from a bag and shot Sabrina five times in the living room. When his mother ran to shield Sabrina he shot her twice, in the back and the arm. His 13-year-old sister Alicia picked up the baby and ran; he fired at her and missed. He then put the gun under his chin and fired, and the bullet lodged in his frontal lobe. Sabrina was dead at the scene. Brenda survived.

The case was difficult for prosecutors because the only eyewitnesses were his mother and grandmother, both reluctant to testify, and his mother was paying for his defence. The judge said it had been a serious decision to bring a child into the world at 17, and tragic to deprive that child of its mother five days after birth.

Sabrina's family asked for him to be kept in, and a cousin reported a tattoo across his back reading murderous deeds. He asked to transfer to Indiana, where his mother had moved, and the request was granted.

In Indiana he worked at a car dealership and drank at Johnny D's, a bar in Jeffersonville. He said the couple had attacked and robbed him. In July 2014 he led police on a 40-minute chase that ended in Louisville, was taken to hospital, gave his name as Zeus, asked nurses for a gun and bit his own wrist.

He met Tammy Jo through his mother, and they began dating in the spring of 2014; by June he had moved into her house. Her friends looked him up, found his record and warned her, and later grew suspicious when she became withdrawn. On the weekend before 10 September 2014 he assaulted her. On the Monday she told a co-worker, stayed away from home and sent him a message ending the relationship, saying that no one gets to terrify her the way he had on the Sunday, and telling him to collect his belongings because she was changing the locks. He turned up at her work the next day. That evening she refused to let him in, and at three o'clock on the morning of 11 September she called police to say he was trying to kick her door down on Locust Street.

That morning Tammy Jo did not come to work. A co-worker, Tessa Shepherd, called her phone repeatedly until a man answered, claiming to be her brother and saying she had gone to care for their father. The voice sounded like her boyfriend's. A friend, Sabrina Hall, called police for a welfare check. A pat-down found a brass-knuckle knife with hair and blood on it. Officer Connie Veers went in and found blood everywhere and what she described as a bloody mound in the bathtub, which was Tammy Jo's body with a camping tent draped over it. She had 25 sharp-force injuries, including eight stab wounds, and blunt-force injuries to her throat, neck, nose, mouth, lips, fingers and chest, some inflicted while she was alive. Her heart, most of her lungs and her brain were missing.

In an interview lasting three and a half hours he said the wicked will flee, said he was tingling and electrified, complained that too many gates were open, claimed to be Zeus and blamed two black men whom he said Tammy Jo had hired to kill him and take the third eye from his forehead. He then admitted kicking the door open, stabbing her, and cutting her skull open with an electric saw so that he could eat her brain, raw and cooked, to take her third eye and absorb her consciousness; he said he had cut out her heart and eaten it, and part of a lung. He said she had taunted him with checkmate and that he could hear her thoughts.

At arraignment he said his name was Zeus Brown and that he had played for the Browns.
