The story

On 13 October 1992 Cory Winnakey, a 22-year-old bartender, was beaten to death in his own bed in West Liberty, Iowa, with what investigators believed was a baseball bat found on the road nearby. He took Hazen home, had sex with her, then went to Marshall's and finally home, falling asleep around seven in the morning. His live-in fiancee, Jodie Hotz, went to work. A roofer, Lester McGowan, collected Hazen around seven or half past and took her to a job in West Liberty, where she tore off shingles briefly before her sister-in-law, Jackie Hazen, picked her up and drove her to Cory's house. A farmer saw them there. The bat carried no usable fingerprints and only blood matching Cory's type; Hotz said neither she nor Cory owned a bat. Hazen went to the police herself, passed a polygraph, and the case went cold. In 1995 an investigator meeting produced Jeff Murdoch, who named Scott Payne. A cold-case unit was set up in 2009 and lost its funding, and by December 2011 the file was dormant.

I never meant to kill you.' Kayla later refused to discuss it, and Becker's mother, Cynthia, did not go to the police.

Valetta checked Becker's background and read the file. Agents re-interviewed Cynthia, who remembered the candles and the words. Becker drew the view from the stairs, and photographs of the structurally unchanged house showed that her account was possible. Her drawing alone showed a door at the foot of the stairs, which would have blocked the girls' view. Kayla, when finally interviewed, said she had heard nothing.

A complaint reported nationally said she had known about the baseball bat before it was public; the authorities later admitted that was wrong.

In January 2019 the judge refused to dismiss for pre-accusatorial delay, despite nine witnesses having died or lost their memories, and in February 2019 he refused to exclude Becker and her mother.

In 2022 a Dateline episode drew widespread doubt. Cory is buried at Oakridge Cemetery in West Liberty.
