The reviews

4.0 / 5 · average of 1

“A nice, clean, small town with a small eatery, a Casey's General Store and a bar and not much else; housing is cheap, $100,000 buys a lot of house and a big lot, and it is centrally located between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. The reviewer lived there about 10 years.”

“The first city the reviewer lived in: very quiet, with courteous people; they plan to spend the rest of their life there looking after their kids because it is a really awesome place to raise them.”

The story

Clarence, Iowa, sits in Cedar County in eastern Iowa, about 40 minutes from Cedar Rapids and two and a half hours from Des Moines. In 2022 it was a town of 965 people with an average age of 51, almost all of them white, and a motto that reads Clarence "welcomes you". It began as Onion Grove, named for the wild onions that grew there, moved closer to the railway, and was incorporated as Clarence in 1866 after a Richard Gere from Clarence, New York, who ran a store called Fish and Gear above the Presbyterian church. By the 1980s it was the kind of rural town where everyone knew everyone.

Adams was shot through the heart with a .22 on Halloween night 1964 and found dying in an alley behind the Greyhound Bus Depot in Davenport.

She had a daughter, Martine Marie Harper, known as Tina, from an earlier relationship with the trucker Larry Hildebrandt. By 1984 the marriage was violent and worn out. The couple slept in separate bedrooms and stayed together for the children.

Tina was 21 that Christmas. She had her own apartment in Clarence and had been living with her father in Davenport while looking for work. Her grandmother drove to the Quad Cities and brought her home for the holidays.

He came home alone. At about 11.30 a witness, Deborah Wagner, saw a green car like the s' on the road near where Tina would be found.

The next morning a farmer, Dwayne Dirks, called the police. Tina was lying fully clothed beside a gravel road about a mile and a half to two miles outside Clarence. She had been shot seven times: three in the chest, three in the head and one at the base of the skull. The medical examiner put her death between 8.30 pm and midnight, and the state laboratory concluded she had been killed where she was found, because seven .22 casings lay nearby and the ice under her body had melted.

They found a dismantled .22 Marlin rifle, several boxes of .22 shells and two shotguns, all hidden in a bag behind a sofa. The bullets from Tina's body matched the rifle. He also named several people who owned .22 rifles, although the police had not told him the calibre.

He grabbed Jean by the throat, demanded a gun, then her car keys, and dragged her outside.

He admitted he first lied to police to protect his father, and said his mother had told him to tell the truth.
