Axtell sits in McLennan County, a rail stop laid out in the early 1880s on the line between Corsicana and Waco. A post office opened in 1882, the town took its name from a railroad officer, and in 1912 a state bank opened so local businesses could borrow. That is a thin set of facts for the second-ranked town in Texas, and it is all the show offers before the case begins.

The count rests entirely on episode 695, dated August 29th, 1989, with four victims, all in Axtell itself: no spread across the map, no return visits over the decades. One episode, four deaths, 333rd overall. The overview opens not on the town but on a boy's childhood, institutions and a state children's home, which makes Axtell the address rather than the subject.

Honest caveat: this is the show's tally, not a crime rate. James and Jimmie choose where to stop, and one episode with four victims is enough to put a small rail town on the board.
