These are the show's cases, not crime statistics: the show picks the towns.
Aberdeen sits in the Upper Hunter Shire, in the Hunter region of New South Wales: one of the first settlements in the Upper Hunter Valley, a town of about 2,000 people as told in 2025. Before settlement the Wanarua people occupied the land, and the name points back to Aberdeen in Scotland.
The town's whole tally is one episode, 620, and one murder: a woman killed on 1 March 2000, in a place of about 2,000 people. There is no drift of cases across the decades and no accumulation of victims; a single death carries the count, and Aberdeen lands at 297 overall and second in New South Wales. The presiding judge called it almost beyond contemplation in a civilised society, a heavy thing to say about one morning in a country town.
She was born in 1955, a twin, and worked at the local abattoir, where she was promoted, work she loved. A Scottish name on the Hunter, a population just over 2,000, and one morning that a judge could barely credit.
