These are the show's cases, not crime statistics: the show picks the towns.
Klawock is a fishing town on Prince of Wales Island in south-east Alaska, in what the hosts call an unorganised area without a county. You get there by ferry or by air. Tlingit people from a winter village to the north used it as a summer fishing camp. A trading post and a salmon saltery came later, and in 1878 a San Francisco company opened the first cannery in Alaska here.
The population went from 19 people in 1920 to about 400 by 1930 and 805 when this story is told. Median household income is $53,750 a year and the median home $204,400. Klawock ranks 259 overall and third in Alaska, and that rank rests on a single episode. Episode 644 covers both murders, one on Halloween in 1974 and one in March 2023, five decades apart. The town is named after a founder the Tlingit remember.
