These are the show's cases, not crime statistics: the show picks the towns.

Ovando is a town of about 80 people in Powell County, in the western central part of Montana, roughly 75 miles northwest of Helena. People have lived in that country for more than 14,000 years, and the buffalo hunting ground there was fought over by local tribes long before white settlers arrived in the 1870s. A post office opened in 1883 and the town took its name from the postmaster's first name. It was a busy place once. The railroad never came, and in 1919 a fire burned most of it down, so the second chance it got was a smaller one.

Episode 14 carries all three murders on its own. There are two cases, one in July 1988 and one in the autumn of 1991, both in the town itself. Three deaths in a place of 80 people is a lot for a single entry, and it puts Ovando at rank 207 overall and second in Montana.
