These are the show's cases, not crime statistics: the show picks the towns.
Wheatland sits in southeastern Wyoming, a couple of hours from Cheyenne: a small town of about 3,659 people in country that started as open ranch land. James sets the scene with the Swan Land and Cattle Company, which ran some 100,000 head between Ogallala, Nebraska and Rawlins, Wyoming, and with the freight road that became the Cheyenne-Deadwood stage road when gold pulled traffic north. Irrigation came in 1883, when local ranchers and a judge formed a company to divert Blue Grass Creek through canals and a long tunnel.
The hotspot is one town and one episode. Episode 53, aired in 2018, carries four victims from a single case on 8 July 2011, all at zero miles from the centre. Nothing else falls within twenty-five miles.
It ranks 176 overall and second in Wyoming. Most hotspots are built from many episodes adding up; this one is a single date on the calendar, four deaths in an afternoon, and a town that otherwise has a cattle company, an irrigation tunnel and not much else to answer for.
