Haiku sits on the north shore of Maui, a small town in Maui County with a population the hosts put at 7,689 in 2018, and it tops Hawaii's entry in the league on a modest four murders. That is the thing about island leagues: one in four of them happened in Haiku itself, in episode 56, and three more within 25 miles carry the rest.
The spread is wide in both directions. Episodes 262 and 474 add two cases from Kihei, 13 miles off, and one from Hana, 22 miles off, and the dates run from 1986 and 1993 to 2014 and 2016, so no single decade carries the total. No single episode with a crowd of victims either: episode 262 is the only one with two, and the other two have one apiece.
James and Jimmie open with the Sandwich Islands and the monarchy, which is a fair warning that the history is doing some of the work. This is a count of the show's cases, not of crime on Maui; the show chooses where to look, and it has chosen Haiku.
