Kihei sits on the south side of Maui, in Maui County. In the height of the whaling era more than 400 ships visited in one season, with up to 100 anchored at once in Lahaina Roads, until petroleum replaced whale oil and the trade ended. Hawaii was annexed in 1898, made a territory in 1900 and became the 50th state in 1959. In 1943 and 1944 more than 100,000 soldiers were based in Hawaii. Population as told in 2022: 22,750.
The league has Kihei at 383 overall and second in Hawaii: three murders in two episodes across two towns, two of them in Kihei itself. Episode 262 supplies the pair, with cases dated 1986 and 1993, and episode 56 adds one from Haiku, 13 miles away, in 2014. That is not one long bad decade but two episodes decades apart, in a place the show came back to.
It counts the show's cases, not the town's crime statistics. The show picks the towns.
