These are the show's cases, not crime statistics: the show picks the towns.
Klawock is a fishing town of 805 on Prince of Wales Island in south-east Alaska, in an unorganised area with no county. You get there by ferry or by plane. In 1920 it had 19 people. By 1930, after the cannery opened, about 400. The Tlingit used the spot as a summer fishing camp long before the first cannery in Alaska arrived in 1878.
Two murders put it on this list, both in episode 644. One was on Halloween in 1974 and the other in March 2023, nearly 50 years apart. One episode carries both, so the count doesn't build over a run of shows.
That earns rank 253 overall and third in Alaska, a lot of league table for a town of 805 on a small island. Median household income there is $53,750 a year. The two cases share an island and a ferry timetable. Otherwise they have little in common.
