Lenexa sits in Johnson County, north-eastern Kansas, about twenty minutes from Kansas City, which makes it the sort of wealthy little suburb where the median household income is $96,477 and the town motto is, without apparent irony, I like Lenexa. It is also, by the show's reckoning, second in Kansas and 99th overall.
The count leans hard on a single episode. Episode 577 covers a case dated 1984 to 2000 and carries eight of the eleven victims, all of them in the town itself. The other three come from the neighbours: episode 633, nine miles away in Prairie Village, with two victims from October 1995, and episode 489 in Edgerton, sixteen miles out, with one from April 1980. Three episodes, three towns, two decades.
Worth saying plainly that this measures the show's cases, not crime. James and Jimmie pick the towns, and a place with a barbecue battle and a healthy median income still gets picked when there is a story worth telling.
