Nowra sits on the South Coast of New South Wales, about a hundred miles from Sydney, and its name is said to come from the Aboriginal word for the black cockatoo. Europeans first applied for land there in 1824, and the township was recognised in 1852. By 2023 it held 22,584 people.
It reaches Nowra once, in episode 392, and that episode accounts for both of the show's cases within 25 miles. In January 2006 a couple in their fifties and forties, who ran a 28-hectare horse farm boarding and training horses and showing Shire horses, were killed in the town and in nearby forest. They had a ten-year-old son and were regarded as pillars of the community.
Rank 553 overall and first in New South Wales is a thin claim, and it is worth saying plainly that this counts the show's cases, not crime statistics. The show picks the towns. Nowra got one visit, and it was a bad one.
