These are the show's cases, not crime statistics: the show picks the towns.
Ontario sits at the far eastern edge of Oregon, pressed against the Idaho border in Malheur County, which the hosts spell out as if daring you to try. About 11,465 people live there, and a group of developers founded the town in 1883. Its name came out of a postal argument: one post office borrowed the name of Ontario in Canada, a rival a mile away fancied being called Morton, and the man with the most land got his way.
Five murders, one episode (503), one town, 0 miles from the centre. The cases fall across four decades: 1974, March 1996 and January 2017. Five killings from three separate moments in the town's life, and the show gathered them into one hour.
Episode 503 opens on the oldest case: a 21 year old mother who had decided to leave her marriage, shot in the chest with a .22 in a restaurant car park in Bend. The rest of the hour is a long, grim history the show found out east, where Oregon runs out of road.
