On 4 July 1994, in Baraboo, Wisconsin, fourteen-year-old Chris Steiner went to bed after the Fourth of July fireworks. The next morning his family found him gone. The screen on his bedroom window had been sliced open, there were muddy footprints on the carpet and outside the window, and the patio door, which the family always locked at night, was unlocked. Police treated it as an abduction. Six days later Chris was found dead, draped over a partially submerged tree on the edge of a river sandbar. An autopsy found no traumatic injuries; the cause of death was drowning and the manner was officially undetermined.
In 1995 the Phillips family moved to Baraboo with their thirteen-year-old son Thad. On the night of 29 July 1995 Thad fell asleep on the living-room couch watching television. He woke as someone picked him up and carried him out of the house.
Thad was kept in the house for 43 hours. He said he liked hearing bones break and was obsessed with fixing them afterwards. Thad broke the door down with an electric guitar, threw himself downstairs again and reached the kitchen phone, whose long cord let him pull the receiver to the floor. He called 911. The sheriff's department thought it was a prank but responded anyway and found him. His legs were swollen to the diameter of basketballs, his kneecaps were backwards and his feet were hanging by skin; he needed years of surgery and walked with a permanent limp.
A notebook was found in his bedroom with three headings, 'get to now', 'can wait' and 'leg thing', and under them the names of local boys. Because the original autopsy on Chris Steiner had not included long-bone x-rays, the body was exhumed. The x-rays showed fractures almost identical to Thad's, with nearly every bone broken in the same place.
Thad Phillips appeared on the television show Escaped in 2009, in an episode called Torture in Suburbia.
