Andy Sherrock was five foot four and 115 pounds. The bog damage was estimated at half a million dollars; the complaint said the reservoir bulkheads and six inlets had been opened, draining the water and risking the whole crop, a potential loss of about $125,000.
There, according to Andy, both men told him he might die if he testified, saying that hunting season was coming and accidents happen. Four days later, at a hearing on September 12th, Andy gave deliberately muddled evidence. Andy later told the police about the threats and was due to testify again.
He never arrived. His father said Andy had lately made a habit of not being alone at home in the mornings, but that day he was not dressed when his sister left, and after the family went out he vanished. His chequing and savings accounts were untouched, two pay cheques went uncollected, no clothes were missing, and his car stood in the driveway with the keys locked inside. The police searched for days.
The next day he went to the police station and surrendered. The search was confined to a swampy area about the size of two city blocks north of Tomah, and the searchers spent about fourteen days wading through waist-deep water in freezing weather, at times using metal detectors. Andy's body was found at 12.40 p.m. under a log in a frozen swamp four miles northeast of Tomah, more than half a mile from the highway, well preserved by the cold water. The autopsy found strangulation and a blow to the skull, possibly drowning as well, and the death was ruled a homicide.
A later investigation examined milk watering at the Sherrock farm. Heinz Sherrock said the practice had begun on a small scale about 27 years earlier, and that Andy had known about it.
