“The best county in Wisconsin, the most welcoming and absolutely safe place; the reviewer grew up in the Milwaukee suburbs and suggests everyone live in Dane if they can afford it.”about 0:06:18
“Dane County houses Wisconsin's capital and is filled with parks and lakes, with plenty to do outdoors and a great urban feel in Madison.”about 0:06:46
“Things were never bad and there is not much to improve; being a college county it does some things well and others badly, it is diverse with many students, bars and clubs, housing gets expensive downtown, it is mostly safe and drunkards are common but harmless.”about 0:07:14
Windsor, Wisconsin is a village in Dane County, about 25 minutes outside Madison, with a population of 8,589 and a median household income of $104,179. In 2021 it was home to the Halderson family. Bart Halderson, 50, was a certified public accountant. His wife Krista, 53, was described by friends as dependable and doting. Their older son Mitchell, 24, worked in the tech industry. He had fabricated hundreds of emails with the college and the insurer to sustain the story, and his girlfriend Catherine 'Kat' Melander was preparing to give up her lease and join him in Florida.
He waited with the body for several hours until Krista came home from work, then shot her too.
On July 2 Krista did not appear at work. The cabin, three hours north in Langlade County, was searched on July 8 after Mitchell drove up with sheriff's deputies; it showed no sign that anyone had been there.
On July 8 deputies searching that farm, near the Wisconsin River, found a dismembered male torso. It was identified as Bart, who had died of homicidal violence including a firearm injury. He complained of a headache, leg pain and possible permanent nerve damage from a fall down the stairs in June.
His girlfriend gave investigators access to her phone. She had used a Snapchat feature to follow his location in real time and had screenshotted a position near the Wisconsin River on July 3. On July 14 searchers found Krista's dismembered legs in two places about thirty yards apart. A part-time medic, Kevin Gruber, said he smelled the remains before he saw them. Three months later a rifle was found behind boards in the farm's barn, and three magazines were found behind insulation in the Halderson basement. Investigators also found an axe with human blood on it, a hacksaw and bolt cutter in an old oil tank, a bloodstained tarp, a piece of human bone in the fireplace, and a floral shoe in the garage containing both parents' phones and driving licences wrapped in paper towel and tinfoil.
The defence called him a normal kid who liked video games and did not kill his parents, and suggested the deaths could have been an accident.
