James Island sits on the central coast of South Carolina, in Charleston County, just outside Charleston. The coastline there is broken up by inlets and salt marsh, and the people on the island insist they are a small town of their own rather than a suburb of Charleston. In 2018 the population was 11,789. James says the place was laid out as James Town, spelt with an e, in December 1671, by colonists from New York who had had enough of the northern winters and taxes. A survey in 1685 does not show the town at all, so it was never properly official, but people kept living and camping there. In 1782 Colonel Teduz Cosacusco led the last known armed action of the Revolutionary War against the British on the island, and the Continental Congress made him a brigadier general for it. Malaria was the main cause of death for children in South Carolina in the 1800s, so planters took their families to summer homes by the beach and left their slaves behind on the plantations. Cotton took the island over in the mid 1800s. Clearing every tree for the fields produced dust storms that forced the plantation houses to be abandoned, and Sea Island cotton, grown from Bahamian seed, became worth up to six times as much as ordinary cotton, with James Island one of the largest producers in the South. Floods and caterpillars ruined the crops in 1867 and 1868, and a boll weevil invasion that began in 1910 wiped out the last of the cotton by 1922, after which the island stopped being farmland. It incorporated as a town on 8 January 1993 and elected a mayor, and Charleston then spent twenty one years suing it over a salt marsh that split the town in two, winning in 1997 and again in June 2011 before finally giving up in 2014. Two bedroom homes were renting for about $1,560 and the median house price was $309,900, with property crime slightly below the national average and violent crime slightly above it.
The story begins one generation earlier.
On the morning of 6 March 2006 his childhood friend Gerard Roper went to Ben Drayton's house to play video games. Roper was thirty, five foot six and about 160 pounds. Nelson was busy and told him to come back later. Nelson drove him.
He then asked Nelson to stop at Drayton's house, saying he needed to get some money. He walked in brandishing the gun and shouting for money. Roper, who knew him well, told him he had the money and begged him not to shoot. Nelson left and did not come back.
The video never surfaced and Roper denied it was him. He beat him with the gun, knocked out and pulled teeth, hit him with a mirror and a vase, fired a shot past him on purpose, burned his scrotum, sodomised him with the gun and then a broom handle, strangled him until he lost consciousness and revived him, and cut and punched him. A friend telephoned Roper's mother to say her son was being tortured and she did not believe it. At one point Roper begged to be killed.
Roper died on the morning of 8 March 2006, after being struck with the mirror and the vase. The pathologist found more than 200 wounds, broken bones in his face, neck, fingers, wrist and tibia, brain swelling, and internal injuries from the objects used; no single wound was fatal and none were inflicted after death. He is thought to have survived about eighteen hours after the sodomy. Later that day a woman who was due to rent the townhouse came to do a walkthrough and found the corpse in the living room.
His defence was that he was in a crack cocaine psychosis and that the other three people in the apartment were making him a scapegoat. The recording of the call to his girlfriend was played. The judge told him it had been about pain and about making Gerard suffer, then said good luck to you, sir, God go with you.
