Nixonville is not a town in its own right but an unincorporated community in Horry County, in eastern South Carolina, about twenty minutes from Myrtle Beach. The area was long isolated by rivers, swamps and the ocean, and locals once called the county the independent Republic of Horry. By the 2000s it was a quiet, rural place where retired people and second-home owners were moving in, and where gunshots were common enough that neighbours did not always notice them.
Diane Mills was born in Spartanburg in 1950. She married David Livingston at about twenty and in 1971 had a daughter, Bambi. The marriage ended in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Diane met Charles Edward Parker at the Tilly Swamp Baptist Church; both were born in 1950, and Charlie had lived in the Conway area all his life. He owned and ran Mirror Tech, a business on his own property about 150 yards from the house, was a past master of the Horry Masonic Lodge and was deeply involved in the church. They married and had a son, Charlie Parker Jr. People described both Diane and Charlie as devout in the best sense, always ready to help and never judging.
In 1990, while going through a divorce, she deeded the property to her mother so her husband could not claim half of it. Diane then mortgaged the land and sold several parcels without telling her daughter, reducing it to about sixty-seven acres, and she refused to deed it back. Bambi married three times and had four children: two sons born in 1991 and 1993, and two daughters. In 1999 Diane went to court seeking custody of the two boys, saying they had lived with her for three years and that Bambi's behaviour had become erratic. Charlie Parker Sr. swore an affidavit saying Bambi had a serious drug problem and had been through two programmes. Bambi said she had fibromyalgia, diagnosed in 1994, and took only doctor-prescribed medication. The family court let her keep the boys.
By 2005 Bambi was still married to her third husband, Charlie Bennett, though they had been apart for years. He met Bambi after being hired at Mirror Tech, and they began dating around 2003. Charlie Parker Sr. fired him in January 2005.
In April 2005 the region was already frightened by a manhunt for Stephen Stanko, wanted for a sexual assault and two killings in Murrells Inlet and Conway. On the morning of 12 April 2005, Charlie Parker Sr. was so late for work that his employee George Carrick and his son Charlie Jr. walked over to the house at about seven o'clock. They found Diane on the floor at the entrance to the master bedroom and Charlie Sr. on the bathroom floor, both shot and both surrounded by blood. Diane had been shot twice in the chest and once in the left arm, and had a fractured collarbone and bruises all over her. Charlie Sr. had been shot twice in the abdomen and once in the face. Eight 9mm rounds had been fired and six had hit. The glass in the kitchen door was broken, a keepsake box had been rummaged through, and paperwork from a woman's boot was spread across the bed. Diane's purse and Charlie's wallet were left on the bed. Stanko was found in Georgia the same day and quickly ruled out.
Bambi inherited everything, including the house, the business and about $700,000 from a trust fund.
Bambi's uncle Tim Johnson told the judge that if she could kill her mother she would kill anyone, and other relatives said they feared for their lives.
Bambi was not called to testify because she had given different versions of events. I went into a rage.' The prosecutor said the investigation was not over because the blood at the scene still matched nobody connected to the family.
In 2007 the Charlotte Observer published a long article about Bambi. She said she had been portrayed as a monster, that she had passed two independent polygraph tests, that she had regained guardianship of her daughters but lost custody of her sons, and that she had not spoken to the boys since October 2005. The boys had gone to Texas with their father, then to Pennsylvania, and were later left with Charlie Parker Jr. In 2009 the DNA from the four blood drops produced a match. He was also linked to a rubber glove found after a home invasion at Sun Colony Boulevard in Longs on 17 October 2006.
The defence called no witnesses. The prosecutor said it had taken four years for the truth to break out of its shell.
In February 2013 he was granted a $50,000 bond while awaiting retrial. By 2021 he had settled on the Carolina coast, married and had children.
Bambi Bennett, who was fifty-three in 2024, was by then describing herself on Instagram as a wife, mother, grandmother and paranormal investigator. Diane and Charlie Parker Sr. are buried together at crest Cemetery in Conway.
In November 2013 he shot Brent Writer, his mother's boyfriend, in the chest with a 12-gauge shotgun at his mother's home in the Indian Springs area. He claimed self-defence, saying Writer had hit his mother, but detectives found that his story changed several times and that he had a history of assaulting his mother himself.
