Dana Shilene Fowler was born on 16 November 1967 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She married her high-school boyfriend after graduation and had a daughter, Ashley, before the marriage ended. She later met Paul Michael "Mike" Satterfield, an HVAC contractor born in 1962, and they had a son, Brandon. Dana opened the Roebuck Beauty Tan tanning salon. By 1995 the couple had separated and were discussing divorce. On 30 July 1995 they spent the evening and night together with the children.
On 31 July 1995 Dana worked at the salon while Mike had the children after work. Patty Taylor arrived at 6.30 p.m. for a hair appointment, and a door-to-door saleswoman, Diane Harris, sold Dana a cleaning product. The hair was finished by about 8 p.m. and Taylor left at about 8.10 p.m., with Dana saying she would lock up and follow her.
Pace laughed, pointing out that she was a married woman with two children and he was a schoolboy living with his parents. He drove a blue and white Ford Bronco with saw-blade wheels.
At about 8.10 p.m. Harris passed the salon, saw Dana cleaning through the window and waved. Returning at 8.30 p.m. she found the lights on and the blinds down, heard thumping, and saw a man climb out of a window. She described a white man in a grey or white T-shirt and blue jeans who "looked crazy", then ran into a nearby house and told the residents to call 911. Deputies arrived at about 9 p.m. In the bathroom and laundry room Deputy Burnett found Dana hanging by a duffel-bag strap from the hot water heater, her feet two inches off the floor, bruised and cut. She had been strangled manually and with a ligature and sexually assaulted. Nothing had been taken.
A DNA profile was developed from semen in the rape kit. Mike Satterfield had an alibi and passed a polygraph, and was cleared.
In 2005 Ashley, then 18, went for an oil change and found that Pace worked there. It matched the semen sample, with a reported probability of one in 900 million. A former girlfriend described his violence and said he had once threatened, as they drove past Dana's salon, to hang her from a hot water heater "like that hairstylist".
The defence argued that a pubic hair found on Dana did not match him and that the DNA could not show when the semen was deposited, and noted Mike Satterfield's fingerprints on the water heater, which he had installed two months earlier. He is held at the Ridgeland correctional facility.
Her car was later found at the bottom of a river, but her body has never been found. Dana Satterfield is buried at Heritage Memorial Gardens in Roebuck, and Ashley later became a victim advocate for the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office.
