The story

By the early 2000s she had a teenage son, Frankie, living with her, and she remarried Randy Bratsky, a diabetic who worked at Smurfit-Stone Container. Randy was born on 1 November 1950. The couple lived in a trailer on Old Georgetown Road in Coward, South Carolina, and were friendly with Kathy and Russell Merrill.

He told the operator he had a gun and would shoot her if she came back. Officers found Randy badly beaten and recovered half of a broken wooden tyre thumper, known as an Ozark thumper. He began dating Susan Hill.

On the morning of 26 November, the Friday after Thanksgiving, Randy clocked out of work before 7 a.m. and friends arrived to take him turkey shooting. He did not answer the door; his truck and boat were gone but his Isuzu Rodeo was there. He failed to appear for an oyster dinner and for shifts on the Saturday and Sunday.

A dark Isuzu Rodeo had been seen at Bluff Landing off Old River Road in Pamplico from Friday afternoon. Police ran its tags three times over four days without result; on the Tuesday Kathleen Street entered it as a missing person's vehicle. When it was searched, an envelope holding $900 in hundred-dollar bills lay on the driver's seat, and small spots of blood were on the steering wheel, column, dashboard and gear stick.

In February 2005 about a hundred volunteers searched two tracts of land in lower Florence County.

On 16 July 2009 Marty McDonald bought Randy's property at a tax sale and had the old trailer removed. Under it he found a human skull wrapped in a tarp, and beneath that a shallow grave, 8 to 18 inches deep, containing a skeleton, clothing and boots. The head had been buried separately. DNA testing at the North Texas Health Science Center matched Randy Bratsky; the Medical University of South Carolina could not establish a cause of death.

The defence suggested Frankie might be responsible, but he invoked the Fifth Amendment to every question. Relatives testified that they had seen Randy driving the Isuzu on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, although officers and hunters said it had not moved.
