“The great thing about Whitley City is that it is small and has a great hometown feel, but there is very little to attract people or investment; it saw its heyday in the 1970s and 1980s with coal and declined when coal did.”about 0:20:41
Whitley City, Kentucky, sits in McCreary County in the far south of the state, close to the Tennessee line. In March 1997 it was a poor, thinly populated place, and the murders that happened there became the biggest case the county had ever seen.
Wilma Jean Farrier, 26, went by Jean. She lived in a trailer in Whitley City and had children. She had recently ended it and had been seeing Gary Roberts for four or five months. She told both men she was pregnant and that the baby was Gary's. On 2 March he fired a gun in the direction of her trailer. On the afternoon of Saturday 9 March, at about two o'clock, he came to the trailer shouting and fired several shots into the ground in front of it while Jean's mother, Jeanette Musgrove, was there.
That evening Jean, her close friend Crystal Conister, 22, and April Sexton, a 16-year-old friend, drove out of McCreary County to a country music dance hall in Somerset. They went there most Friday and Saturday nights. At the club Crystal met Chris Boswell, a 38-year-old from the area, and the two danced together. The group left at about half past midnight.
He said his father and Jean were in the living room, both dishevelled from a fight. Chris Boswell then came out of a bedroom half dressed. Boswell fell into a bedroom. Jean had gone into the bathroom; she came out and he shot her. She had also been choked during the earlier struggle. All three died of gunshot wounds.
He burned the clothing they had worn and hid the .357 Magnum, which had belonged to him.
Jean's mother had been trying to reach her all day on Sunday 10 March. When she could not get an answer she called the police, who went to the trailer and found the three bodies. There was no sign of a robbery. Crystal and Jean were found in one bedroom and Boswell in another. Boswell was identified from papers in the trailer; the police did not know how he was connected.
She said Jean had circled the parking lot three times before parking.
An informant led police to the murder weapon, which was found in woods about three miles from the trailer.
He said he had gone to London to see his ex-wife, Eula Griggs. She first told police he had come to her house on the Monday after the murders, then changed her account and said it was about two o'clock on the Saturday night, which supported him. She later said she had lied because she was frightened.
He fought for DNA testing of the hair found in Jean's hand and under a broken fingernail. The tests, reported at a 2011 hearing, showed the clump of hair was Chris Boswell's, and that hair from the fingernail came from Jean and from Boswell, with a third strand that could not be identified. The fingernail clippings themselves had been destroyed 14 years earlier, despite a court order that all the evidence be preserved; two retired detectives denied signing the destruction form and said their signatures had been forged.
