“Great with a few exceptions: commuting is a nightmare, the green and town square are full of bad kids, there are mean kids at the elementary school, winters are hard and poorly insulated old homes cost a fortune to heat, and homes are overpriced; otherwise nice, quiet country living with good people.”

The story

Guilford sits in south central Connecticut on Long Island Sound, about fifty-five minutes from Hartford and forty-five from New York City: 22,377 people in 2019, ninety-one and a half per cent white and wealthier than the national average. That was the town's only killing in thirty-six years.

He stole from family, girlfriends, a church and the family of the mother of his child.

Mindy Lee was twenty, from Texas, visiting her father Bruce Lee in Guilford with her two-year-old daughter, and due to return home to her fiance.

They hooked up about nine o'clock and walked to the Guilford Green and the fairgrounds. He carried her over an embankment and laid her by a fence, snorted cocaine, took her jacket, trousers and underwear and left, throwing the clothes into woods near his home where they were never found. The next day he told police he had been at home watching a Yankees game.

Mindy was last seen at the fairgrounds in October. She was reliable and had a small daughter, so her disappearance was taken seriously. He lost work as a concrete labourer, once for stealing and once because colleagues were uncomfortable around him.

On 27 December 2000 a ten-year-old girl called Alyssa Kleinkoff came home from a sleepover and found her mother and her two youngest children stabbed to death in the bedroom. Catherine 'Kitty' Kleinkoff was forty-three, a hard-working single mother who cleaned for a living and lived in a house owned by a church. She had been stabbed forty-five times; her six-year-old daughter Rachel and four-year-old son Kyle had each been stabbed six times. A pocketbook had been emptied, there were no signs of forced entry and the number of wounds made it look personal.

He had called her earlier that night with a story about arguing with his father and needing somewhere to sleep, and she left the door open. He knew her PIN because she had sent him to withdraw cash before. Her sister Nancy Philiock said Kitty had been missing a key and things from her purse.

They bought both, collecting Michelle Iderola on the way, and spent the evening drinking and snorting lines. At 11.15 he telephoned Sharon Collie in North Branford saying he was getting money and a bank card from his aunt. She refused three times to collect him. At one in the morning he telephoned Iderola from Kitty's house, saying Kitty had lent him her car and ATM card. He picked her up in Kitty's Ford Taurus, withdrew money and reached Collie's house at 1.45 a.m., where a dealer brought $240 of crack. Sharon's husband Michael joined them and they smoked it all.

At about eight he met Charles Santanello at a bus stop; the two had never met, worked out within minutes that they were both crack users and teamed up. At eleven they bought thirteen bags of crack on Grand Avenue and smoked them in an abandoned house. Later a dealer called Annie sold them crack on credit, and they moved to Bobby Espazito's house on Popular Street, where they played cards and smoked until eleven at night. The four drove there in a car belonging to Espazito's mother.

Police were waiting. He asked for a cigarette and then said, 'I can't take this shit anymore. I'm going to tell you guys everything.' He said he would tell them about last night and about Mindy too.

At the police station he was given a Coke and cigarettes. At 2.15 a.m. he signed a notice of rights, and at 2.20 another waiver. Offered a lawyer, he said, 'I don't want to call a lawyer, I just want to get this over with and tell you guys everything.' He said he could not believe he had killed those children just to get high. His statement began at 2.20 and he spoke so rapidly that he had to be slowed down. He was reluctant only about which child he stabbed first, and said, 'The kids woke up and were screaming, so I stabbed them.' At 3.30 he signed a five-page statement. Officers found her above ground in woods at the edge of the fairgrounds, closest to Old Whitfield Street. Bail was set at two million dollars.

The town reacted with shock. Women who met at the Dunkin' Donuts on Route 1 after exercising at Club Fitness told a reporter they could not believe it. Connie Joyce, a lifelong resident, said she had never locked her door.

Michelle Iderola and John Procop testified for the state; Iderola said he had been calm and quiet and did not seem that intoxicated when she was with him after one in the morning.
