The story

By 1990 she was 44, living in Vermont and recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and she took a job as a housekeeper at the Pico Resort Hotel. In June 1992 Gina ended the intimate side of the relationship, and though they continued to share a bedroom in the two-family house Gina had bought with her father, she made clear it was over.

Gina had meanwhile met Patricia Lynn Steller, a 43-year-old woman from Middletown, Connecticut, while visiting her aunt Margaret Pugliese in Bloomfield. The two began a relationship in April 1993, and on 13 August 1993 Gina moved from Vermont into Patricia's house on Red Orange Road in Middletown, where Patricia lived with her 26-year-old nephew Ronald King.

On 23 August 1993 she told a co-worker that Patricia was a 'city slut dike' and that she was holding Gina captive in Connecticut. Late that month she had Natalie Jurgen drive her to Middletown with a marker, intending to write on Patricia's car; she changed her mind and posted a letter instead. On another trip she photographed Patricia's car in the Wesleyan University car park and had Jurgen drive her round the neighbourhood while she took notes on the route. She told Jurgen she was going to kill 'Lynn', because she wanted to get back at Gina, and in October 1993 she asked Jurgen to help.

That morning Patricia erased and reset the tape in the answering machine on her kitchen counter. She and Ronald left for Wesleyan together; Gina left last, put her Pomeranian in its crate and locked up. At about 3.30 p.m. Patricia and Ronald came home through the garage and were attacked in the kitchen.

During the struggle someone fell against the answering machine and pressed the memo button, so the tape recorded what followed. Patricia was shot four times and stabbed 14 times in the face, neck and chest; Ronald was shot three times and stabbed six times in the chest and abdomen, and both were beaten. The tape runs seven minutes.

A neighbour, Lisa Flagg, saw the two leave at about 3.55 p.m. and drive to a pond up the street, where the gun was thrown into about three feet of water behind the Cyprus restaurant. Gina came home at about 5.30 p.m., found the bodies and ran to a neighbour to call the police. Officers found a bloody kitchen knife, bullets, a shattered lamp and a broken mason jar. One officer noticed the answering machine said its tape was full and took it.

He led police to the pond. She fought extradition until 24 December 1993, when she gave up and was returned to Connecticut. Melody, who had waited in the car and was given immunity, never entered the house.

The state's case rested on the tape, the knives, DNA and eyewitnesses. Henry Lee, director of the state forensic laboratory, concluded that more than one person had planned and carried out the killings. The defence fought to keep the seven-minute tape out, arguing it was largely inaudible and could not be authenticated; the judge admitted it after testimony identifying the voices, and it was played four times.
