Donald Clark was 41 in 2008 and lived at Crane Road in Barnesville, Georgia, with his two sons, Joshua and Jacob, aged ten and eight.
He had been having problems with his father and stepmother, and the Clarks offered him somewhere to stay. He called 911. The following day the couple agreed to divorce and went to the courthouse to begin proceedings.
She was eventually talked out of the house and the police were not called.
The divorce was finalised in July 2008. Donald kept sole custody of the boys and the house.
He tied two plastic bags over Donald's head. The two of them rolled the body in the bed linen and a camouflage quilt and put it in the trunk of Donald's own car, along with his wallet, his work boots and the bat. On the way he threw the wallet, boots and bat out of the car near Potts Pond Road. He parked Donald's car at the Trade Winds Motel in Forsyth. She had already cleaned the bedroom. That same day she telephoned Donald's workplace and said he might have run off with Danielle Young.
Donald's sister Brenda usually spoke to him every day. After two days without a word she called the sheriff's office and reported him missing, put up fliers and spoke to the local newspaper. The police put out an alert for his black 1997 Honda Civic, Georgia tag AWJ 7727, and searched ponds and fields. On 22 November a resident found Donald's wallet near Potts Pond Road in eastern Lamar County, and the search moved there, drawing in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, local police, state agencies, a helicopter and cadaver dogs.
On 23 December, while the search continued, Donald's boots, wallet and the aluminium bat were found in the woods. On Christmas Eve, Sheriff Joe Buice found a rotting deer beside the road, decided it had been left as a decoy, and followed the tree line. The body was in an advanced state of decomposition and had been there about a month. The medical examiner said death could have been caused by blunt force trauma to the head, probably from the bat, or by asphyxia from the plastic bags tied over his head.
Donald's car was found at the Trade Winds Motel the day after Christmas and processed on 29 December; there was evidence that a body had been carried in the trunk.
The case was moved from Lamar County to Butts County because of pretrial publicity.
She was ordered to have no contact with her sons until they were 18, and never to contact them afterwards. Brenda Maddox said the family had got justice and that she had been raising the two boys since Donald's death. Donald Clark is buried at Westwood Gardens in Griffin, Spalding County.
