The story

Robert Daniel Arnold Jr., known as Dan, was born in 1951 and became a minister of music. Dan commuted once a week to the Southeastern Baptist Seminary in Wake Forest to study for a theology degree.

On 14 February 1984 Dan went for a haircut at the Valley Style Shop in the Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh. Dan, who liked to help people, talked to him and invited him to dinner that night. After dinner they went to a Raleigh motel and had sex.

Dan first lied about it, then the next day handed her a letter before driving the babysitter home. She later said that on three occasions he coerced her by threatening to expose Dan's bisexuality and by implying threats to her children.

The doctor gave him a mild tranquilliser.

The Arnolds visited several times a week. Staff noticed the three of them huddled together in the corridors and eventually decided the contact was more sexual than religious and banned touching on hospital grounds. Dan told the therapist that he would rather move and give up his church post than end the relationship. A job résumé dated 8 June 1984 was later found among his things.

Their friend Michelle Honeycutt came home with them for a piano lesson. Six-year-old Dana saw something on the ground; the car was reversed at speed and they drove to a convenience store to call for help. Dan was lying dead on the church lawn. He had been beaten about the head, stabbed repeatedly and his throat cut. His wife's purse was beside him, clutched in his hand. The autopsy found that he had been stabbed with two different knives.

She attempted suicide in mid-March 1987 and was diagnosed with major depression.

The state chose not to retry her. Dan Arnold is buried in Springvale cemetery in Clinton. A book about the case, The Hymn of Commitment by Sherry Matthews, was later adapted into a low-budget 2016 film called Tarnished Notes.
