“The town relies too much on tourism, all the jobs are minimum wage, there is nothing but the Boundary Waters, taxes are absurd and spent frivolously, the local government is a bunch of good old boys stuck in the 1960s, and only resort owners and mine workers do well.”

The story

Jeffrey Gulford Getters was born on 8 March 1956, the son of Stan, a miner, and Katy, a homemaker. His older sister Rose had moved to the Ely area with her husband, and after Jeff finished high school he followed her north to work as a taconite miner, staying with her while he settled in. He was 19 in the spring of 1975.

He played the French horn in high school and was polite and clean-cut, but after a year at Concordia College in Moorhead he came back a darker version of himself, using LSD and amphetamines, dabbling in Satanism and carrying a pistol. On a smelting trip to Lake Superior he fi shots into the ceiling of a bar while people danced. He managed the family dairy, the Ely dairy, and was expected to take it over.

On 8 March 1975, his 19th birthday, Jeff was given a bottle of banana liqueur by Rose and her husband and went out to celebrate.

Jeff had also been at the Legion that night. He had a date he forgot, met a college student named Liz who was home from Duluth for the weekend, and went with her and another couple for pizza at 1 a.m. He offe her his class ring. His blood alcohol was later measu at 0.17.

They said they were looking for a party, took beer from the refrigerator and left. At 7.10 a.m. he saw it again at the Holiday station in Ely, where he bought a pie. At 9.20 a.m. he turned up at Roxanne's apartment looking ti, shaky and hung over, with a small bruise on the bridge of his nose, a cut lip and two scratches on his left hand. He had changed from his work jeans into dress jeans and his long underwear was wet to the knees. He said he had been wading through snow and thought he might have been in a fight at the Legion, but he was not sure.

Jeff woke and got out to urinate. They attacked him with the hatchet. They threw the hatchet into the trunk, cove the bloodstained snow, drove back to Ely, cleaned the hatchet and put it back in the car, took the car to a car wash, then parked it in the co-op store parking lot after stealing the tape player, tapes and speakers.

The car sat there for five days. On 14 March 1975 the police were called. They found a frozen puddle of blood beneath the trunk and, inside, the body of Jeff Getters, frozen solid, his wallet still in his back pocket. The autopsy found death from blood loss from multiple wounds: two-and-three-quarter-inch wounds on each side of the head that fractu the skull and bruised the brain, a gaping wound running from the back of the neck around the right side that cut the neck muscles to the backbone, the mastoid bone and the skull and penetrated the brain, and further cuts to the left side of the face and neck that broke the jaw and cut two teeth. His left thumb was missing and was never found. There were defensive wounds and his hand was stuck to his head with blood. He had been alive when placed in the trunk and bled and froze to death. The pathologist put death between 4 and 10 a.m. on 9 March, probably before 8 a.m., and thought two weapons were used: a double-edged knife and a broad, flat blade such as a hatchet or axe.

Jeff's father Stan said he could never forgive him and wanted one shot with his 30-06; Jeff's younger brother Jay, then a high-school student, wanted the death penalty. Jay later went to law school and became a tax attorney after being told he was too personally involved to prosecute.

Roxanne stopped visiting. In 1982 he and Control Data analyst Barbara Hansen formed Digital Dispatch Inc., which sold computer-based education and antivirus software. Contracts came from Merrill Lynch, the Florida State Lottery and, through a subsidiary, from the US Department of Transportation, the Department of Energy, the Postal Service and the IRS, none of whom knew they were dealing with prisoners. He used the alias Eric Hansen. The company's gross receipts were $813,904 in 1991, $942,839 in 1992 and $833,525 in 1993, and Hansen paid herself $147,000 in 1991. He was quoted in the Washington Post in 1988 and on National Public Radio. Carol Michaels, the younger sister of a girl he had dated, began visiting him when she turned 18 and came once or twice a week for years; he refused her proposals of marriage.

Jay wrote to the governor, organised a petition drive in Crosby and the Iron Range, appea on local radio and television and allied himself with victims' rights groups.

The family sued him. He offe 5% of his after-tax income, 80% of any inheritance or windfall and 50% of the proceeds from selling any business interest for the rest of his life, but they rejected it because accepting would mean hoping he succeeded. They settled for a lifetime cap of $375,000. Bail was set at $500,000 and he faced 25 years. His mother closed the office and got rid of the computers.

Jeff is buried with them at Lakewood Cemetery in Crosby, Minnesota.
