The story

In October 2012 the Evans family lived in a large house on two acres in a gated community in Aledo, a small town in north central Texas about fifty minutes from Dallas. Jamie Evans, 48, had taught first grade and worked as an assistant principal for fifteen years before retiring at the start of 2010 to home-school her two youngest children. Her husband Darrell travelled often for business. Their older daughters, Emily and Audrey, were out of the house; Emily was staying at their grandparents' and Audrey was visiting from college.

He had been to the allergist that day, where Mallory made a racist remark about a black worker mowing the grass; the two argued in the doctor's office and again in the car. He ate in the pool house and watched Family Guy, then went back inside and found his mother and sister watching the presidential debate. Around nine he went upstairs, and when Mallory asked him to watch a film he refused, still angry about her remark.

Around 9.30 p.m. he knocked on her door and asked her to watch The Waterboy. She said yes, and they had a pillow fight. He had earlier taken his father's folding knife and paced the house imagining killing her, but decided a knife would cause too much pain. He fetched a .22 revolver he had stolen from his grandfather and spent about an hour walking round the house thinking about what he was about to do.

At about 11.15 p.m. he told Mallory that their mother wanted her, then shot her in the back and the head. He ran downstairs and shot his mother three times in the study. Hearing noises, he realised Mallory was still alive, reloaded and shot her again, then went back and shot his mother once more in the head. He walked outside for a few minutes, came back in, put the gun on the kitchen counter and called 911.

The call was calm. He told the dispatcher that he had just killed his mother and sister, that he had used a .22 revolver, that the gun was on the counter and still loaded, and that he had been planning to kill for a while. He said his family had been suffocating him and that he did not like people's attitude. He asked that no family members visit him. He then walked out with his hands above his head and was taken into custody.

He had planned to kill his sister Emily and his grandparents at their house, and then Audrey in the morning, but he was stopped after the first two murders.

After months there he was restored to competency at Rusk State Hospital.
