Berlin, New Jersey, sits in the south-western corner of the state, about thirty minutes from Philadelphia, a small town of roughly 5,800 people crammed in among other towns rather than out in the country. It began as Long-A-Coming, named for the Native American trail, was a stagecoach stop, and got its rail line and station in 1853. In 1867 the town renamed itself Magnolia, but another Magnolia already stood within twenty miles, so after three months it became Berlin. Kelly Ripa was born there. On the night of 28 January 2013, Trisha Dulin, in her early twenties, was outside her family's house with its backyard barbecue area, talking to Vincent D. Philippus, known as Vinny D, a man she knew from high school and had not seen in years. At about ten o'clock her ex-boyfriend Karetti Paulson, twenty-five, turned up. The pair had recently split; Trisha's family blamed Paulson for getting her into heroin, and he wanted her back. He believed Vinny D was the new man in her life. Paulson approached Philippus and a fight started at once, punches and wrestling on the ground, ending when Trisha stepped in and the others pulled them apart. Trisha and Vinny D went inside; Paulson stayed in the driveway. The arrow struck Paulson in the abdomen, and he staggered into the yard of the neighbour, Joseph Cassis, and collapsed. Cassis shrugged and went back inside, but he had heard someone ask whether they were going to be shot with that and heard groans under his window, so his son called 911. At about 10.50 p.m. Berlin police arrived and found Paulson face down and apparently dead; he was pronounced dead at the hospital. The autopsy found an arrow wound to the abdomen, the arrow passing through the abdominal wall and stomach, striking the iliac vein and partly exiting his back, with two and a half litres of blood in the abdomen. An orange-capped syringe lay beside his body. Trisha told police she had not seen Paulson in weeks, and Philippus said his bloody knuckles came from sexual activity with her, a claim she denied. A search of Trisha's bedroom, consented to by her mother Helen and covered by a warrant, found drugs and orange-cap syringes identical to the one by the body, and Paulson carried matching drugs. In August 2016 Philippus came forward. He said that the morning after the killing, with Trisha's father Thomas waiting at the house, the family met in the living room and agreed to say Paulson had an HIV-positive needle so the shooting would look like self-defence, and that Ashley repeatedly pressed him to stick to the story. At the 2019 retrial an expert testified that pig-carcass tests showed the arrow penetrated sixteen inches at a full draw, 11.5 inches at seventy-five per cent, six inches at fifty per cent, and at twenty-five per cent fell harmlessly to the ground. On 24 July 2019 he and Ashley filed for bankruptcy. Paulson is buried at Cold Spring Presbyterian Cemetery in Cape May, New Jersey. His ex-girlfriend Lauren Palmer said he was a genuinely good person who was never malicious, and that their daughter Aurora, too young to remember him, would grow up knowing who her father was.
