“There is very little crime because criminals do not want to travel that far; police are always visible and a motorist can barely speed down Lemmon Drive without being pulled over; the only recent trouble was a miscreant breaking into cars five years ago and people stealing unlocked bikes; the reviewer worries about neighbourhood speeding up to 40 miles an hour because children walk to school.”about 0:05:25
“The best part is being far enough from the casinos to see the stars at night; it is quiet and the people are friendly.”about 0:06:59
“The roads are well maintained and the fire department can be counted on to turn up.”about 0:07:11
“Some police staff genuinely care, but a small portion is corrupt and only looking to fill quotas; you are more likely to be pulled over and ticketed in Reno than in most cities.”about 0:07:33
“Crime has been brought to Lemmon Valley; it is much smaller than new-build areas like Damonte Ranch and Spanish Springs but has more crime than both combined; houses are cheaper, the area is broken up by open land and looks rural and suburban at once, and incomes are definitely lower.”about 0:07:49
In July 1974 Lemmon Valley, Nevada, was a scattered community of trailers on sand dunes outside Reno, reached by dirt roads and home to a good many horses. The eldest was fifteen-year-old Blythe Harrington, a quiet girl who rode horses regularly along the trails toward Antelope Valley.
On July 2, 1974, at the start of the Fourth of July weekend, Blythe left the trailer at about 5.15 p.m. on her dark horse, heading north on Lemmon Valley Road toward Antelope Valley. She took a route she used all the time. He would later be estimated to have ridden about nineteen miles that evening.
He said he had searched on horseback, failed to find her, returned for his truck because the horse was tired, and then found the spot with his wife. Deputies drove out to a remote place beside a little-used dirt road and found Blythe in the sagebrush. Her horse was tied to a tree nearby, unharmed.
The officers roped off a radius of only fifteen feet around the body and, lacking lights, waited until daylight, leaving her on the ground overnight. More officers arrived in the morning and the pathologist reached the scene at about 10.30 a.m. An autopsy established that Blythe had been shot three times in the back with a .22 and that she had recently had sexual intercourse.
A few days later deputies searched the trailer. A small box on a closet shelf was knocked down and burst open, spilling torn scraps of paper. One scrap carried the word 'love' in a young woman's handwriting. Painstakingly reassembled, the scraps formed a diary in which Blythe described a sexual relationship with her stepfather and said she had loved him since she was eight.
Blythe's father went to court and regained custody of the five surviving children. In September 1974 the house in Sparks where the couple were living with defence attorney Vivian Ruben was burgled; the intruder took between $25 and $30 in pennies and $80 in change.
The defence failed to suppress the diary, and it was admitted as evidence of motive. A young woman who initially said she had been riding a dark horse in the area then changed her story, saying she had been in Sun Valley on a similar horse, and later alleged that deputies had pressured her. A discarded drinks can was found at a cattle crossing she mentioned.
The assistant had thrown away the sperm slide and the swab had not been preserved.
In 1979 the Nevada Supreme Court held that the unreported test was direct exculpatory evidence and that the state could not benefit from its own mishandling. Because the swab was gone and the slide intentionally discarded, a fair retrial was impossible.
