This express episode concerns Alvo, Nebraska, a community of about 100 people in the east of the state, thirty minutes from Lincoln and forty from Omaha. Early settlers arrived around 1869 and the railroad was the reason for the town, which is named after the first child born there, the daughter of the railroad master. Its motto is 'It is unique'. Alvo has no online reviews, so James reads reviews of nearby Eagle, which has a population of 138, and he notes that 18 per cent of residents are aged five to nine, a median household income of $41,250 and a median home cost of $189,800.
He was married to Lane Jorgenson Rowe, and the couple lived in a farmhouse near Alvo.
They could not get inside, and the Eagle fire department put the fire out. Searchers found a foot sticking out of bedding in the west bedroom. The autopsy showed no soot in her trachea, so she was already dead or dying before the fire. She had a skull fracture behind the left ear and a fractured sternum. Her right breast had been removed with a razor blade, and she had been cut from the sternum through the pelvic area and opened up, with organs mutilated. The pathologist said the skull fracture came first and left her unconscious, that she was still alive when the cutting began, and that she died from blood loss from a severed artery in the leg. A claw hammer was found at the top of the stairs, though without blood, and pliers carrying burned muscle were found in the bedroom. The fire investigator said two and a half to four gallons of accelerant had been used on the first and second floors.
At about two that afternoon he phoned his father and brother Dan, crying, and said Lane had fallen down the stairs and died. Wayne passed this to the state patrol.
The prosecution pointed to the hammer fracture, the lack of defence wounds, and the fact that former occupants fell on the stairs without such injuries. The state's psychiatrist found no condition that impaired his judgement, and the brain scan and tracings were normal.
Lane's family called the decision irresponsible. James closes by comparing the case with the week's regular episode set in Framingham, Massachusetts, where another man mutilated his wife.
