Columbia is a small city in Monroe County in the extreme south-west of Illinois, a suburb about twenty minutes from St Louis, Missouri, and the episode presents it as a safe, family-oriented place. It was incorporated in 1859 as a small farming settlement, on land beside the Mississippi that had been occupied by Native Americans for twelve thousand years, and it grew as a German haven after immigrants arrived in covered wagons from the eastern states. The episode gives its population as 11,090 and describes property and violent crime as running at about half and about one-third of the national average respectively.
He grew up in a church where members spoke in tongues, and he was remembered as the quietest and gentlest of the Coleman boys. He joined the Marine Corps after high school and trained as a canine military policeman. In 1997, at a canine training seminar at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, he met Sherry Wece, an Air Force military policeman from the St Petersburg area of Florida. Three months later he brought her home unannounced, telling his parents he was driving her to Chicago. He did not come back that night. The next morning he telephoned his father to say that they had married. Sherry was pregnant, and their son Garrett was born in 1998; Gavin followed in 2000. Sherry left the Air Force to become a stay-at-home mother.
The family bought a three-bedroom house at Robert Drive in Columbia, and neighbours described them as the perfect American family. He took out a $250,000 life insurance policy in 2006 naming Sherry as the only beneficiary.
He later wrote on his computer that November 5, 2008, was the day Tara changed his life. Sherry found out. She refused to divorce him.
In January 2009 a hand-delivered note appeared in the family mailbox, and on April 27, 2009, another note arrived, calling itself the last warning. The police gave the house extra patrols. On April 28 he drank heavily in front of neighbours and told Sherry to get off her arse and fetch her own drink, something they had never heard him say.
In the early hours of May 5, 2009, between three and five o'clock, Sherry, Garrett and Gavin were strangled with a ligature in their home. Sherry was found naked and face down on her bed, already in rigor mortis, with two black eyes from fighting her attacker. Garrett, who was eleven, was in his bed under a white sheet marked with a red spray-painted circle, and nine-year-old Gavin was face down near the wall of his room, with spray paint on his sheets. A clump of his mother's hair was caught in the crook of Gavin's arm. Red spray-painted messages covered the walls, including you have paid, I saw you leave, fuck you, I'm always watching, and punished, you've been punished. The pathologist, Dr Raj Nanduri, put the time of death between three and five in the morning and gave the cause for all three as ligature strangulation.
On the way home he telephoned his neighbour, Detective Justin Barlow, and asked him to check on his wife because she would not wake up. Cell phone records showed that he drove past the exit for his house, went north, made another call and turned around. Barlow went into the house and found the three bodies. In his interview at the Columbia Police Department he asked for a blanket because he was cold, although the room was not cold, and kept it wrapped around his arms to cover scratches. He showed no curiosity about how his family had died. He mentioned Tara almost by accident, calling her a friend from Florida, and then admitted to a sexy phone flirtation. He denied an affair.
The police found a latex glove stained with red spray paint near the Jefferson Barracks Bridge, and an orange piece of twine with a noose tied in one end close by, matching twine used in the Colmans' back yard. The neighbour's camera showed no strangers or strange vehicles. She handed over her BlackBerry and laptop, which held explicit videos and messages. He also had a Home Depot receipt for spray paint in his wallet.
He was held without bail. Joyce Meyer Ministries told him to resign or be fired for breaching its morals policy, and it issued a statement expressing sorrow.
Tara testified for about thirty minutes and had to watch the explicit videos. Joyce Meyer and her son also testified.
He was held first at Pontiac Correctional Center in Illinois and then moved to Dodge Correctional Institution in Waupun, Wisconsin. In time the three bodies were exhumed from Evergreen Cemetery and reburied with Sherry's family so that her relatives could visit them.
