Marianne Hagford was born on 26 July 1965 in Hennepin County, Minnesota, one of six children. They moved in together that summer. They bought a house in 1988, and for years they separated and reconciled, drinking until they passed out, fighting and forgetting the fights.
In August 1992 police were called to the house after a domestic dispute. A relative said he never saw Hagford sober after May 1993.
By eleven he was drunk enough for his mother to notice on the phone when he said he and Marianne were buying a Christmas tree. Witnesses said she became angry when he remarked on another woman and left without him. At about two he telephoned his parents again, talking to his father at half-time of the Vikings-Packers game about sawing the bottom off the tree. At about half past two he called again; when his mother answered he screamed "Mama, mama, come quick. Mary's dead," and hung up. His parents drove over and found him near the garage. His father went inside to call police and found Hagford face up on the living room floor; his mother kicked a handgun on the floor and put it on the couch.
Crystal police were dispatched at 2.47 p.m. They found the house in disarray, empty bottles everywhere, the Christmas tree on its side with saw marks on the trunk and blood over its base, a bloody saw, a shell casing, a shattered picture frame and a large pool of blood under the tree. The autopsy the next day confirmed a single gunshot to the back of the head, fired with the muzzle pressed against her skull. He was taken to the Robinsvale Police Department at 3.37 p.m. and interviewed twice, neither time recorded. That did not fit a contact wound to the back of the head. He told the lieutenant he would give a taped statement, but not then: "You have to understand I just killed the woman I love."
He said he did not remember shooting her because he had blacked out, had no memory from Friday evening to Sunday morning, and did not intend to harm her, though he conceded he probably shot her because nobody else was there. Both sides agreed he killed her and disagreed over whether he was too drunk to form intent.
On 26 July 1994, Hagford's twenty-ninth birthday, the family gave statements.
