In May 1991, aged eighteen and living in an apartment in Asio with friends, he was drunk and fired a .22 rifle at random outside, hitting a parked van.
In July 1995 he argued with a man in Little Falls and later slashed his throat with a knife.
He spent a lot of time a few blocks away at Donna's house. Donna, a year older, was married to Todd Mimbach, a well-liked senior computer technician at Information Technology Partners. Three children lived at home: Todd's twelve-year-old son John, Donna's nine-year-old daughter Amber, who had had major back surgery so she could walk, and their own twenty-two-month-old son Daniel, who had needed heart surgery after birth.
In May or June 2000 he found a night job loading trucks at Cisco in Moundsview, and in August moved into a cottage at the Circle Court Apartments in Circle Pines. He began telling people he heard voices, which a friend said talked to him at the cottage. In September he lost the job but told his family he was on leave for treatment, and instead drank about two litres of vodka a day. Police were called to a suicidal call at his place that month. Walter said the voices told him his family was out to kill him.
The plan was to admit him to Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids for a mental evaluation.
Todd took him back to the Mimbach house; there was nowhere else.
He had stayed awake, taken a hammer and a kitchen knife and gone from room to room, bludgeoning Todd, Donna and all three children in the head as they slept, then cutting the throats of Todd and the children. Donna's throat was not cut; she died of blunt force injuries alone. Todd did not appear at work and relatives who came to the house found it locked. Lino Lakes police chief Dave Pecchia called it the worst scene he had seen in twenty-four years of law enforcement, and lead investigator Tony Heggelson said there was no sign of a struggle.
A manhunt began. Police in Rockford recovered the bloodied bag. Bail was set at $3 million, and Judge Stephen Eskew ordered a psychiatric evaluation.
Their expert called him a paranoid schizophrenic who knew what he was doing but did not know it was wrong. The state's expert and a court-appointed expert both found no mental illness, only psychopathy, and diagnosed malingering: he knew what he was doing and knew it was wrong, chiefly because he hid the evidence. Seventy-eight crime scene and autopsy photographs were reviewed, forty-two excluded as too inflammatory and another twelve later.
Todd, Donna, John, Amber and Daniel are buried together under one headstone at St Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Lino Lakes.
