In 1994 Farah Fratta was shot dead in the garage of her home in Atascocita, Texas, a suburb north-east of Houston in Harris County. She was 33, the mother of three young children, and had worked for American Airlines for several years. The marriage had broken down over his sexual demands and his insistence on an open marriage, and Farah had filed for divorce in 1992.
Bob was born in 1957. As a teenager he was on a hunting trip when his father suffered a fatal heart attack in the woods. In 1983, aged 26, he married Farah Backer, a woman from Surrey, England, four years younger than him. They had Bradley in 1987, Daniel in 1988 and Amber in 1990. Farah worked for American Airlines, and Bob worked as a public safety officer in Missouri City, a job he took after failing to get into the Houston police academy.
According to the account given in court, Bob wanted his wife to take part in sexual acts with other women while he watched, to choke him while he masturbated, to urinate on him and to defecate in his mouth. A court-appointed psychologist, Dr Lawrence Abrams, described their relationship as pretty sick and said it was the most extreme sexual deviancy he had seen in one couple. Farah went along with some of it for a time but eventually refused. She also said in a deposition that Bob used steroids, was obsessed with his body, wanted an open marriage and had asked her to have breast surgery. She had the surgery in August 1992 as a condition of reconciliation, and Bob moved back in for two weeks before they separated again.
The divorce and custody case dragged on through 1993 and 1994. Bob told friends and co-workers that he would not have to pay child support if Farah were dead, called her the bitch, and began asking people whether they knew anyone who would kill her. He offered a thousand dollars and his Jeep Wrangler, later raising the offer to five thousand dollars. The state later found at least fifteen men who said he had approached them.
On November 9th, 1994, Bob ate dinner with Farah and the children, then took them to a Catholic church in Humble for catechism. He stayed for a parents' meeting and repeatedly left to make and receive calls in the church office, an unusual thing for him to do. Neighbours heard the shots and a scream, saw her fall beside the car, and called 911. They saw a man get into a silver or grey car with a burned-out headlight and drive away. Farah's parents, Lex and Betty Backer, arrived and were with her as she died.
Bob arrived with the children about half an hour after the police. Officers thought he showed no sadness, concern or surprise, and he was taken in for a fourteen-hour interview. He suggested the killing might be connected to his work, to Farah's boyfriend, to drugs, or to a plot by Farah against him. A 9mm pistol and $1,050 in cash were found in his car; he said the money was for new carpet.
The gun had been bought by Bob in 1982, and a firearms examiner matched a bullet fragment from Farah's garage to it.
In a separate matter, Bill Planter, a former sheriff's deputy and briefly chief of police in Splendora, approached Farah's parents and offered to make Bob disappear for $10,000. Planter claimed he had been framed by Harris County officers.
Farah's parents adopted the three children and changed their surname back to Backer. He declined to make a final statement. His son Bradley and Farah's brother Zane attended.
