Nassau Bay, Texas, is a small suburban city of 5,191 people about half an hour outside Houston, built on land that was once Colonel Raymond Pearson's Spirit of 1776 ranch and planned in 1962 as an exclusively residential, gated community. It is the sort of place whose online reviews praise the police and fire response times and complain about the humidity, and where, in the late 1990s, two neighbouring couples' marriages came apart in a tangle of accusations.
David Harris was born in 1958 and became a successful orthodontist, eventually running Space Center Orthodontics with several offices and making as much as $35,000 a month. She studied dentistry in Colombia, came to the United States in the late 1980s for further training at the University of Texas Houston dental branch, and was crowned Miss Colombia Houston. They met in 1991 while both working at the Castle Dental Center in Houston, and married on Valentine's Day 1992 with a reception at the Nassau Bay Hilton. By 1998 they had twin boys, alongside David's daughter Lindsey from his first marriage. By every account they were devoted to each other.
Gale Bridges was a petite, stylish 39-year-old mother of three, two years out of a divorce from her husband Stephen. During that divorce Stephen claimed she had been carrying on a lesbian relationship with her best friend Julie Knight, whose husband Chuck made the same claim about Julie. A private investigator, Bobby Baka of Blue Moon Investigations, was hired by Chuck to follow the two women on a shopping trip to Baybrook Mall. She reported that they went to Nine West, shared pretzels and drove through McDonald's, and that there was nothing sexual in their behaviour at all. She refused Chuck's request to embellish the report.
In August 2001 Gale was hired at Space Center Orthodontics at about $1,800 a month. Over the following days she booked liposuction and breast enlargement, hired a personal trainer and went to a tanning salon, determined to win her husband back.
David asked to meet Gale to end the affair. David had taken Gale to the Hilton rather than Perry's and booked room 604 under an assumed name. A Blue Moon investigator filmed much of it.
The judge gave her 20 years. Lindsey sued her in civil court, and in 2007 David's parents Gerald and Mildred filed a $5 million suit and were awarded $3.75 million.
