First established as a railway spot during the construction of the Calgary and Edmonton Railway, and named for Airdrie in Scotland.
about 0:05:41It originated as a stopping point for steam trains; only railway buildings existed in 1901 when the first farmhouse and barn were built.
about 0:05:54It then got a post office and a store, and by 1909 the place was incorporated.
about 0:06:05Up past the fifties Airdrie was just a whistle stop village like Cochrane and Okotoks, but unlike them it bulldozed its original historical Main Street.

Alvin Liknes, born in 1948, and Kathy Liknes, born in 1961, lived in Airdrie, Alberta, a fast-growing suburb about half an hour north of Calgary. It was the second marriage for both of them, and between them they had five adult children.
He had got into the University of Alberta medical school in the mid-1980s and been voted class president, then left within a year after being caught cheating and having what he called a mental breakdown. He then represented himself in the Tax Court of Canada over employment insurance benefits and won.
By 2014 Alvin and Kathy had sold their house and were preparing to move to Edmonton and spend winters in a condo in Mexico. They held a three-day estate sale from 27 to 29 June 2014. On the Sunday night Kathy's daughter Jen O'Brien was visiting with her five-year-old son Nathan and her baby Max. The baby would not settle, so at about 10.45pm Jen went home with him, leaving Nathan asleep in bed beside Kathy.
Sometime in the night an intruder disabled the lock on the house and the internet router. There was blood on the walls, bloody drag marks, and a smear on a closet door that looked like it had been made by a smaller hand. At ten the next morning Jen came back for Nathan and found the house empty. She called her husband, saying her family had been murdered and the bodies taken, then called the police. The blood suggested the three had been taken alive rather than killed there. An amber alert was issued, the longest in Canadian history.
The investigation was enormous, drawing in the RCMP, the Canada Border Service Agency, Passport Canada, the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority, US Homeland Security and Mexican officials because of the Mexico condo.
At the farm and on his computer police found the case against him: bone fragments, seventeen teeth fragments, jewellery, a piece of shackle, a meat hook with Kathy's DNA, a hacksaw with Alvin's and Nathan's, child-sized handcuffs, Tyvek suits, wigs, a straight jacket, stolen adult nappies, insulin, chloroform, lock-picking tools, and searches for torture, dissection and the exact lock on the Liknes house. Aerial survey photographs taken at 9.23am on 1 July, by chance, showed three bodies face down by the sheds; twenty-six hours later they were gone.
