“A longtime resident loves the town and its people but says the small community makes the drug problems and poverty stand out.”about 0:07:25
Hot Springs is a small town in western Montana, close to the Idaho border and about an hour and twenty minutes from Missoula. James describes it as a pretty place in a valley surrounded by mountains, with a population of 618, a median household income of $19,659 and a median home price of $224,100. The town began as the settlements of Pineville and Camas in the 1890s, was incorporated in 1929 and was known as Camas and Camas Hot Springs before taking its present name. Fires destroyed most of Main Street in 1918 and the town burned again in 1931; the sawmill burned, the hospital closed and, after the Hot Springs Mercantile burned in the 1980s, falling cattle prices and curtailed logging cut the population to about 400 by 1990. Its motto is 'limp in, leap out', a reference to the supposedly healing waters.
In 2003 he rented a friend's Ford Ranger, fell asleep at the wheel on the way back from visiting his grandmother in Browning, wrecked the truck and injured himself; he was eventually ordered to pay $2,500 restitution by August 11, 2004.
Kenmille was married to Terry and had four children, and sang with the Elmo-based Chief Cliff drum group.
Employees saw Kenmille become increasingly drunk and unsteady. Dave Smith heard glass breaking and what sounded like men roughhousing and laughing. Eusta checked the room several times and eventually found Kenmille slumped, apparently unconscious, with the water around him tinted red and blood on broken glass from the sauna door. Rigor mortis prevented them from putting him in a car, so they called 911 and Eusta began CPR. Kenmille was taken to the hospital in Plains and pronounced dead.
A post-mortem found blunt force injuries to the head, abdomen and limbs, a deep gash on the right arm, and drowning, along with anal dilation, rectal bruising and internal lacerations.
The state was allowed to use the earlier attack on JB as evidence of motive, intent, preparation and plan.
The Wild Horse had been operating without a licence since about 2009. In 2019 the pool where Kenmille died was sealed and torn down during renovations. On September 16, 2020, the county health department ordered the resort to cease operations.
