The story

Gary Lee Triano was born on 6 November 1943 and grew up in Tucson, Arizona. He graduated from Rincon High School in 1961, took an accounting degree at the University of Arizona and attended some law school classes before deciding against a legal career. In the 1960s he married Mary Cram and they had two children, Heather and Brian. Triano wanted money, status and power. In 1973 he ran for Tucson City Council and was disqualified because he was building a house in Catalina Foothills, outside the city he wanted to represent. By 1977 he was a stockbroker and an officer of Great Southwestern Trust Corp, a land development firm that filed for bankruptcy that year. He made money in the early 1980s and in 1983 invested in a bingo hall at South Nogales Highway owned by the Tohono O'odham tribe, the site of what became the Desert Diamond Casino. In 1985 he and Mary were named Couple of the Year by the Tucson chapter of City of Hope; they divorced in 1986.

They married in San Diego on 4 October 1986 and had two children. Triano did a land swap with the Pima County Board of Supervisors in 1988, borrowing heavily and taking money from relatives of Senator Dennis DeConcini; he owed about $850,000. In 1990 the couple attended a University of Arizona basketball game with Donald Trump and Marla Maples and were thrilled to be mentioned in the newspaper. Triano was a heavy-set man who gambled on golf and tennis, lost $10,000 at a time and lived in limousines and private planes whether or not he could pay for them.

In September 1993 she sought the first of three restraining orders, saying he was violent, kept a loaded gun in his Cadillac Eldorado, mixed alcohol with antidepressants and threw things around the house. They divorced in November 1993. That year Triano filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy for his Frontier Investments business, listing $40 million in debts, including about $2.1 million to the IRS and $55,000 to the Mirage Hotel and Casino.

In 1995 he met Robin Gardner, twenty-two years his junior, and had a child with her, though he refused to marry again.

On 1 November 1996 Triano played golf at the La Paloma Resort, where his membership was about to end because his dues were unpaid. He ate chips and salsa in the clubhouse, agreed to meet friends at Janoff's restaurant at six and was expected at a surprise birthday party at his house, his birthday being days away. He got into a borrowed 1989 Lincoln Town Car and found a blue canvas bag holding a wooden humidor on the passenger seat. Thinking it was a birthday present, he reached for it and it exploded at about 5.38 p.m. The blast killed him instantly, threw debris 200 yards into the air, tore the roof off the car and blew out the windows of a minivan beside it, cutting and bruising a 25-year-old named Kisho Kudo. Witnesses driving on Sunrise Drive heard the explosion and had metal and glass fall on their cars. Dr Bruce O. Parks, the medical examiner, waited seven hours for the car to be declared safe; the autopsy took nine hours and fifteen minutes. Triano had part of his right hand blown off, his skull split open, metal in his brain and his eyes ruptured. He had 22 cents in his pockets.

Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said the bombing looked like a professional hit, and the mob was considered, along with casino debts, Chinese investors and his divorce. The device was a 17-inch pipe bomb filled with a pound of smokeless gunpowder and set off by remote control. The police eventually discounted the mob after an ATF cold-case review by Tony May and Tony Mangan found sloppy, amateur solder joints on the device.

In March 2011 doctors found her exaggerating her symptoms and competent, in September 2011 a Pima County judge ordered a full examination, in December 2011 she was declared incompetent but restorable, and by October 2012 she was competent again. She said she was innocent, twice. Heather Triano, who had defended her for years even after the television profile, spoke of their closeness; Brian Triano said she had murdered their father for nothing but the comfort money would bring.
